‘Smell of tiger precedes tiger’ \u00e9 um di\u00e1rio de viagem existencialista.
Andr\u00e9 Pr\u00edncipe viajou de Lisboa a T\u00f3quio por terra e por mar com o desejo de fugir, de ir para lugares distantes. Os sentimentos iniciais de inquieta\u00e7\u00e3o e aliena\u00e7\u00e3o desaparecem \u00e0 medida que bares e quartos de hotel vazios d\u00e3o lugar \u00e0s janelas dos comboios e \u00e0 vastid\u00e3o do deserto, e regressam \u00e0 medida que nos aproximamos das grandes cidades asi\u00e1ticas. A sequ\u00eancia fortemente cinematogr\u00e1fica foi concebida para ser lida da direita para a esquerda, bem como da esquerda para a direita, expressando o aspeto circular da viagem.
‘Eu j\u00e1 estava longe, numa cidade, e queria ir para as montanhas. Perguntando por a\u00ed, consegui um n\u00famero de telefone. Disse-lhe para onde queria ir e de onde vinha, e no seu ingl\u00eas muito pobre, ele conseguiu dizer-me que nunca tinha visto um portugu\u00eas, apesar do seu av\u00f4 ser meio portugu\u00eas. Ele tamb\u00e9m me disse que n\u00e3o havia problema em ir com ele. Fic\u00e1mos calados a maior parte do tempo, caminhando pelas florestas. “Come, dorme agora, p\u00e1ra”, dizia ele, e depois sorria. Era dif\u00edcil para ele entender a minha pergunta, mas quando finalmente entendeu, disse: “O cheiro do tigre precede o tigre” [“Smell of tiger precedes tiger,” em ingl\u00eas]’. Fiquei surpreendido com o seu repentino dom\u00ednio do ingl\u00eas. Ele n\u00e3o disse mais nada. Nas horas seguintes, caminh\u00e1mos em sil\u00eancio. Os nossos passos ecoavam pela floresta. ‘Smell of tiger precedes tiger’ is an existentialist travelogue.
Andr\u00e9 Pr\u00edncipe travelled from Lisbon to Tokyo by land and by sea, with a desire to escape, to go places far away. The initial feelings of uneasiness and alienation fade as empty bars and hotel rooms give place to windows of trains and the vastness of the desert, and return as we approach the Asian big cities. The strongly cinematic sequence was designed to be read from right to left as well as from left to right, expressing the circular aspect of the journey.
‘I was already far away, in a city, and wanted to go to the mountains. Asking around, I came up with a phone number. I told him where I wanted to go and where I came from, and in his very poor English, he managed to tell me that he’d never seen a Portuguese, even though his grandfather had been half-Portuguese. He also told me it would be okay to go with him. We were quiet most of the time, walking through the forests. “Eat, sleep now, stop,” he would say, and then he would smile. It was difficult for him to understand my question, but when he finally understood, he said, “Smell of tiger precedes tiger.” I was astounded at his sudden mastery of English. He said nothing more.
