By exploring, in flashback, the conceptual process of Carrilho da Graça, starting from the present moment and moving retrospectively towards the beginning of his career, this book approaches his founding principles. It is structured around the contents of the exhibition Flashback / Carrilho da Graça, presented at the Casa da Arquitectura in Portugal between April 2022 and January 2023: ten built projects – from the Lisbon Cruise Terminal (2010-2018) to Casa Fonte Fria (1985-1988) – and various references ranging from Julião Sarmento’s Blue, Red, Yellow (2018) to Kazimir Malevich’s Architectone: Alpha (1923). However, this record is also interspersed with texts and transcripts of testimonies from individuals who have contributed to the construction of the work and paradigmatic universe of this author, as well as other thinkers who contribute here to the necessary historical and critical analysis of the work of one of the most prolific architects of contemporary times.
