O livro Coleções #2 – Carmelo Aires apresenta uma das mais importantes coleções particulares de arte popular portuguesa da atualidade. Natural do Redondo, no Alentejo, Carmelo Aires iniciou-se na prática de colecionar ainda muito jovem, demonstrando interesse por diversas tipologias de objetos. Contudo, foi a cultura material da sua terra natal que mais o cativou, levando-o a reunir um notável acervo de olaria do Redondo, arte pastoril e utensílios antigos de cozinha.

Nesta obra, procuramos mostrar a sua coleção sob duas perspetivas: por um lado, através de uma seleção representativa de peças; por outro, investigando as motivações que levaram à sua formação, bem como os métodos de pesquisa e aquisição dos objetos.

Este volume é o segundo de uma série dedicada a coleções privadas de arte popular portuguesa. Insere-se no propósito de divulgar uma forma artística ainda relativamente marginalizada nos circuitos das belas-artes. Ao centrar-se em acervos particulares, a coleção oferece ao público a oportunidade de conhecer peças e conjuntos habitualmente inacessíveis, mas de grande relevância tanto histórica quanto estética.

The book Coleções #2 – Carmelo Aires presents one of the most important private collections of Portuguese folk art today. Born in Redondo, in the Alentejo region, Carmelo Aires began collecting at a very young age, showing an interest in various types of objects. However, it was the material culture of his homeland that captivated him most, leading him to assemble a remarkable collection of pottery from Redondo, pastoral art, and antique kitchen utensils.

In this work, we seek to show his collection from two perspectives: on the one hand, through a representative selection of pieces; on the other, by investigating the motivations that led to its formation, as well as the methods of research and acquisition of the objects.

This volume is the second in a series dedicated to private collections of Portuguese folk art. It is part of an effort to promote an art form that is still relatively marginalized in the fine arts world. By focusing on private collections, the series offers the public the opportunity to see pieces and sets that are usually inaccessible, but of great historical and aesthetic relevance.
