Uma vez, eu, Chuang-Tzu, sonhei que era uma borboleta, esvoaçando de um lado para o outro, sendo, em todos os aspectos, uma borboleta. Estava consciente apenas da minha felicidade enquanto borboleta, sem saber que era Tzu. Logo despertei e lá estava eu, sendo, de novo, verdadeiramente eu próprio. Agora, não sei se era, naquela altura, um homem a sonhar que era uma borboleta, ou se sou, agora, uma borboleta a sonhar que é um homem. Publicado por ocasião da maior exposição de Príncipe até à data, no Centro Cultural Vila Flor (Guimarães, Portugal), Non-Fiction é uma reflexão sentida sobre como usar a fotografia. O livro combina fotografias com entradas de um diário de sonhos registado durante últimos vinte anos. Juntamente com muitas imagens novas, revisitamos as fotografias de aventura de Príncipe, provenientes de diferentes séries, e ficamos a saber mais sobre elas — onde e quando foram feitas, e como se relacionam entre si. Non-Fiction é aquilo que se experimenta com os olhos abertos, o que se testemunha. É factual, do ponto de vista histórico ou empírico. Non-Fiction é a fotografia de Príncipe. Fiction é aquilo que se vê com os olhos fechados, os sonhos, o que se imagina. No livro, as fotografias e o texto interagem de formas misteriosas, humorísticas e significativas. A não-ficção torna-se tão próxima da ficção que só pode ser definida pelo seu negativo — como um humano é um não-macaco, ou um homem, um não-mulher. As coisas são transitórias. Metade da poesia da vida perder-se-ia se não sentíssemos que a vida era, ou um sonho, ou um palco, onde os actores raramente se apercebem de que estão a representar os seus papéis. Trata-se daquilo a que chamamos realidade.

Published on the occasion of Príncipe´s major exhibition to date, in Centro Cultural Vila Flor (Guimarães, Portugal), Non-Fiction is a heartfelt reflection on how to use photography. The book combines photographs with entries of a dream diary done in the last twenty years. Together with many new images, we revisit Príncipe´s adventure photos from different series, and we learn more about them, where and when they were made, how do they relate to each other. Non-fiction is what you experience with your eyes open, what you eyewitness. It is historically or empirically factual. Non-fiction is Príncipe´s photography. Fiction is what you see with your eyes closed, your dreams, what you imagine. In the book, the photos and text interact in mysterious, humorous, significant ways. Non-fiction becomes so close to fiction that it can be only defined by its negative, like a human is a non-monkey, or a man, a non-woman. Things are transitional. Half of the poetry of life would be gone, if we did not feel that life was either a dream or a stage in which the actors seldom realised that they were playing their parts. It´s about what we call reality.
